City of Hope

For more than 90 years, City of Hope, a private, not-for-profit organization, has been leading the way to help millions of people who are battling life-threatening diseases. City of Hope is one of 39 elite institutions nationwide to be named as a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center — the highest accolade given by the NCI — and one of the most advanced biomedical research and treatment facilities in the world. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) recently gave City of Hope an overall score of 99 out of 100 for health care quality and safety. Equally impressive, patients gave City of Hope the highest possible rating (three stars) in all categories for combined medical and surgical services in the Patients Evaluation of Performance in California (PEP-C II) survey.

At City of Hope, people find a world of progress and promise. Our biomedical campus covers 113 acres of state-of-the-art research laboratories and patient care facilities, in a tranquil environment of healing. Within the main arms of City of Hope our facilities include:

  • Beckman Research Institute - Founded at City of Hope in 1983, there are now more than 550 researchers conducting groundbreaking basic research every day, which allows city of Hope to quickly take new discoveries from the bench to the bedside. The Institute’s work is carried out by its divisions of Biology, Immunology, Neurosciences, Molecular Medicine, Molecular Biology and Virology, as well as many independent research laboratories across the campus. City of Hope was selected to host the first Beckman Research Institute; today there are five nationwide

Representing 28 board-certified specialties, City of Hope’s 107 attending physicians are some of “America’s Best” practitioners in their fields.
  • Center for Biomedicine & Genetics and the Sylvia R. & Isador A. Deutch Center for Applied Technology Development

As a National Gene Vector Laboratory, the CBG is also responsible for the production of plasmid DNA vectors for federally funded gene therapy research.
  • General Clinical Research Center
Providing a sophisticated environment for the clinical testing of new therapies, our General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) is funded by the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health. The GCRC makes available specialized research nurses, examination and procedure rooms, and a Cell & Specimen Processing Laboratory. Among its most important roles is the facilitation of studies conducted by the Southern California Islet Cell Resources center.
  • Graduate School of Biological Sciences
For nine years, City of Hope’s accredited Graduate School of Biological Sciences has offered postgraduate training in molecular biology, immunology, molecular medicine and neuroscience, including academic classes and intensive laboratory research.
