CERTIFIED MEDICATION AIDE

Air Force Village is a non-profit military officers retirement community in San Antonio, TX, dedicated to exceptional retirement living and the individual well-being of our residents. Air Force Village I, located near Lackland Air Force Base and Premier medical facilities, opened in 1970 and is home to over 500 retired career officers from all branches of military service, their spouses, widows and widowers. Air Force Village II, seven miles away, has grown to a vibrant neighborhood of 700 residents since its opening in 1987.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provides prescribed medications to residents of the Health Care Center
  • Ensures doctor’s and resident Care Plan orders are followed and that the prescribed medication is given as specified, and that appropriate records are maintained
  • Explains medications to residents and observes that oral medications were taken properly
  • Reports to the Charge Nurse any resident who keeps medications in his/her room
  • Must successfully complete various pre-employment requirements and comply with all provisions of the Air Force Villages Personnel Policy Manual
  • Accurately administers medications to residents as prescribed by the physician
  • Accurately records information about the administration of medications
  • Adheres to Texas Department of Human Services criteria in performance of duties
  • Safeguard medications
  • Responds to signals from the nurse call system (bells, lights, etc.) to determine residents’ needs
  • Complies with doctor’s orders within scope of responsibilities (turns residents at times directed, applies/releases restraints as required, measures and records intake and output, etc.)
  • Informs supervisor of any adverse chance in residents’ condition
  • Attends in-service sessions, continuing education sessions, etc., as required
  • Practices proper infection control procedures
  • May be required to perform Nursing Assistant duties
  • Observes residents to determine any adverse reaction or side effects attributable to medications.  Reports observations to the Charge Nurse
  • Takes and records vital signs
Requirements
  • Must be able to work 11pm - 7am on a rotating schedule
  • Must be able to deal effectively and sensitively with Village residents in meeting their particular needs
  • Must have the ability to recognize and respond to the needs of Health Care Center residents
  • Must be able to communicate orally and in writing in English and be able to understand instructions given in English
  • Is expected to perform most duties with direct supervision and exercise limited independent action to meet the requirements of the position
  • The ability to communicate in Spanish is helpful, but not essential
  • Must be current on the Nurse Aide Certificate and a permit as a medication aide issued by the Texas Department of Human Services and have current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
  • A high school diploma, or equivalent, is desirable
  • Must be able to demonstrate competence in the tasks performed by a Medication Aide
  • Must satisfy all requirements of the Nursing Assistant job description
  • Must be current in attaining the Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) necessary to meet licensing requirements
  • Must be willing to participate in continuing education programs

 

Preferred Requirements:

  • Certified RAC Nurse (RAC – C) preferred but not required
  • Special training in Texas Long Term Care Assessment Tools and Care Plan formulation, computer literate, geriatric experience, supervisory skills, etc. is desirable
  • At least one year of long term care experience is desirable, either as a Nursing Assistant or a Medication Aide
