Product Manager, User Experience for Client1

 

In an effort to encourage the maximum use of its Wi-Fi services, Boingo offers complimentary smart client software on 10 different operating system versions.  From the end user’s perspective, each Boingo software client, regardless of platform, is engineered to make get a user online quickly with a simple click of the “Login" button.  Yet in order to provide this level of experience, a great deal of effort must be made to hide complexities inherent in our business.

 

The Product Manager – User Experience for Client1 will have day-to-day responsibility for the product lifecycle for a sub-set of Boingo software clients (see next section for selected platforms).  This individual will engage with all other departments of the company (including, Marketing, Engineering, Operations, Business Development, and Finance) to ensure that Boingo realizes maximum opportunity in the market from the distribution of smart clients on the given platforms.  Additionally, this product manager will contribute to the ongoing evolution of the Boingo user experience by adding new features and adapting the software clients to be compatible with internal initiatives (such as Bundling, Free Networks, and Membership).  The PM will also maintain the option for Boingo to offer unbranded versions of these clients to platform services partners.


 

Responsibilities:

The Product Manager – User Experience for Client1 has the responsibility for managing, maintaining, and improving Boingo’s software clients for four (4) OS platforms:

·          PC (Win XP, Vista, Win 7)

·          MacOS (10.5 and 10.6)

·          Windows Mobile

·          Linux

This individual will be responsible for requirements gathering, PRD creation/approval, and project management related to the OS platforms noted in the above paragraph.  Additionally, this individual will also contribute significantly to the following cross-platform initiatives and product management functions:

·          Client Signup and Selfcare

·          Client Branding, Skinning, and Localization

·          Regional Pricing

·          Offline Client Directory

·          Competitive Analysis (with a focus on other Wi-Fi connection software in the market).

 


Nice to haves:

Strong knowledge regarding social networking trends (particularly on smartphones) is desirable.  Area knowledge of wireless/Wi-Fi is preferred but not a requirement.

Requirements
  • 4+ years experience in the telecommunications or consumer electronics industry.
  • 4+ years of product management responsibility with a proven record of writing marketing requirements documents and use cases.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills (writing sample requested).
  • A critical thinker with strong analytical and organizational abilities and an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work both independently, as a team, and across cultures with a global set of outside partners.
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Business Administration, Mathematics, or related field.
  • Preference given to those candidates with:
    • User interface design or formal human factors training
    • Experience developing or marketing wireless networking technologies (such as Wi-Fi, cellular, etc.)
    • Demonstrated ability managing and communicating with engineering audiences (particularly software development).

·          Candidates should be familiar with releasing end-user facing software in support of a service/subscription business (examples include IM/Chat clients or Virus Protection software).
