Description

 We have a need for an English language journalist to produce articles and other content for America.gov audiences in the Middle East and North Africa.  Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Developing articles to enhance the effectiveness of United States Government information outreach in the Middle East, to include positive and credible presentations of American policy, society, and values. This content will be written in English and include, but not be limited to, feature and news articles, photo captions, and other interactive content.

  • Maintaining awareness of the communications environment in the Arabic-speaking world, and seeking to produce content of interest to young Arabic speakers.

  • Researching, conceptualizing and proposing assignments outside the office, in the D.C. metropolitan area and beyond, at think tanks, congressional hearings, etc., as required, accomplishing communications goals.

  • Responding to assignments from the appropriate office leadership.

  • Producing an average of three  - five articles per week for website posting on America.gov, each piece averaging 800 - 1000 words.  Each piece must be acceptable in subject matter, content, and style, and require 15 minutes or less of editing by appropriate office leadership.  When possible, each piece should be accompanied by visual images.

  • Adhering to the highest standards of professional journalistic standards and ethics.

  • Maintaining the highest level of integrity in accurately portraying USG policy, understanding the sensitive nature of U.S. relations with various countries in the region and the general environment in various Arabic-speaking countries.

 

Requirements

 

  • BS or 4-yr College Degree in international relations, history, political science, Arabic language or studies, journalism or communications.

  • Experience as a journalist or writer for government or non-governmental organizations.

  • Fluency in English.

  • Knowledge of current events in the Middle East, North Africa, and South and Central Asia.
  • Knowledge of U.S. foreign policy in the region.

  • Working knowledge of computers and basic applications, including Microsoft Word.
