The Sr. Specification Writer is responsible for writing specifications for new contract construction which focuses on working with architects, specifiers, developers, owners, and general contractors. This entails deciding what products go on every opening shown in a Project’s Plans allowing compliance with Codes, Standards, Laws and Aesthetics. The Specification Writer must be able to administer classes for employees and customers dealing with the Sections they write. The incumbent is required to participate in industry related conventions by staffing the company booth.

Organizational Relationship:

This position reports directly to the Sr. Manager SpecCentre. This position will work closely with the Construction Sales Representatives, Architects and Specifiers. There are no direct reports to this position.

Key Result Area:

Documentation 50%; Regulatory Compliance 20%; Safety 20%; Research 10%.

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Create Builder’s Hardware specifications from architectural drawings and Specification Checklist as presented by Sales Representative.
2. Administer classes for employees and customers to familiarize them with the Sections they write specifications for and Work contained therein.
3. Responsible for ensuring that all specifications meet relevant Building Codes, Laws and Standards.
4. Prepare supporting documentations to specification to be presented to architect.
5. Develop and deliver training programs and AIA/CES Programs to employees and customers.
6. Performs duties and responsibilities as described in the quality system.
7. Perform other duties as assigned by the manager to support departmental goals

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Knowledge of security industry required
• Detail orientated
• Ability to meet deadlines and set priorities
• Knowledge of BEST / Precision products preferred
• Ability to develop and present training programs to employees and customers.
• Skills or experience with personal computers, including electronic E-mail, personal scheduling, word processing and electronic spreadsheet skills
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal are required.
• Proven knowledge of NFPA 101, Life Safety, NFPA 80, Fire Doors and Frames, NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, UBC code book, BOCA code book, SBC code book, IBCO, IBC, NFPA 5000 and all ADA compliance regulations.
• Must posses complete knowledge of Builder’s Hardware.
• Working knowledge of Electronic Access Control, Surveillance and Intrusion systems and specifications.

Education/Experience:

• Associate’s degree; technical/vocational school degree or equivalent preferred
• 15 years experience in the door and hardware industry, which includes writing specifications, hardware schedules, field service work, and job take off for bid preparation.
