Description

THE DEVEREUX WHITLOCK CENTER

Established in 1912, the Whitlock Center was the site of our founder, Helena T. Devereux’s first residential school for children with emotional, behavioral and developmental disabilities. Today, the Whitlock Center serves over 300 individuals on our campus in Berwyn and in homes and apartment settings located throughout Chester and Delaware Counties. The Whitlock Center provides an array of programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, and dual diagnoses and mental health diagnosis.

Services include vocational training and employment, job coaching and job placement assistance, residential services and supports and respite care. The Whitlock Center offers individuals a continuum of care services from transitional living apartments to semi-independent living programs to programs that provide more structure and supports for challenging behaviors. The Center also has a health services facility for individuals who require 24-hour nursing care.

Programs

Campus-based Residential Living – The Hankin Health Services Center is a 32-bed residential health center. Nursing care is provided 24-hours per day for individuals with complex medical conditions. Other cottages and houses on campus provide specialized residential treatment services to males and females.

Community-based Residential Living – Individuals in the Transitional Living Apartment Program reside in homes and apartments located in Chester and Delaware counties. These residences are for individuals requiring minimal assistance in performing daily activities such as personal hygiene, laundry, safety, shopping, medication administration, and meal preparation. Other adults may live in group homes located in communities throughout Chester and Delaware counties. The goal of the program is to challenge each person to achieve his or her greatest degree of independence via life-skill instruction including housekeeping, budgeting, self-care, shopping, and cooking. Transportation is provided to daily vocational programming or work. Recreational, religious, shopping and entertainment activities are also offered.

Respite Services – The Whitlock Center provides respite care for families and companions caring for individuals, ages 21 and older, with special needs. Short and long-term respite care is available on our campus or in the care recipient’s home.

Supported Employment Program – The goal of this program is to integrate adults with special needs into the community by providing them with employment opportunities in local area businesses. On-site training and supportive contact with the employer as well as extensive consumer and advocate involvement are part of this program. To meet these goals, individuals work with a vocational training specialist to secure competitive employment.

Thomas Stein Creative Arts Center – Residents of the Whitlock Center may participate in art-related activities designed to provide art as a therapeutic outlet. Individuals age 21 and older are exposed to a variety of artistic ideas, media, and techniques. This program promotes the development of the individual, including the individuals’ personal interests and ideas, self-confidence, and personal growth through exploration and creative expression.

The Mendelson Community Center –is a staff training facility with instructional classrooms, a state of the art gymnasium and the Mary Robin Brigham Aquatic therapeutic pool. The indoor, handicap accessible, pool offers Individuals opportunities for leisure, recreational and therapeutic activities. The properties of water are ideal for improving flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance in a safe and effective environment. Water also provides a calming and relaxing environment for Individuals with challenging behaviors, and those persons who present as hyperactive, autistic, brain injury and those with other physical or behavioral issues.

Devereux Industries – is a vocational training center that focuses on the acquisition of skills needed to secure successful competitive employment in the community. It is composed of several workshops that function as small businesses. These workshops include an automotive center, pewter design and manufacturing, silk screening, bike shop, and greenhouse. Workers receive paychecks and learn how to budget and save their earnings.
