SMU – Development & External Affairs
The Advancement Associate provides donor communications, stewardship and administrative and research support for the Director of Development for the Northeast Region and serves as the a team resource for volunteer and event process management. The Director of Development, Northeast Region, on the National Major Giving Programs Team, is charged with identifying, cultivating, and soliciting a robust portfolio of regionally-based donor prospects and developing and managing regional volunteer committees in support of The Second Century Campaign.
Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Providing general administrative support, including managing heavy travel for director, scheduling appointments, handling general office duties, organizing daily development tasks, reconciling the regional budget, processing expenditures and reimbursements and handling other administrative needs;
- Handling donor and volunteer stewardship and prospect management duties, including researching and tracking donors, maintaining communications and providing support and materials for regional volunteers, drafting correspondence and proposals, completing gift transmittals and follow-up up with Gift Administration, coordinating endowment reporting with the Donor Relations team, collaborating with the National Outreach Program and Program Services staff on regional event activity, maintaining the development database, executing large-scale mailings, and managing donor and volunteer support activities as required;
- Serving as point of contact for volunteer and event management on behalf of the full National Major Giving Programs Team, including communicating department processes and procedures regarding volunteer and event activities, meeting with the Directors and Advancement Associates in advance of volunteer and event activities, coordinating with other staff as needed, developing a reporting system regarding these activities and communicating with the Executive Director regularly regarding the status of volunteer and event activities.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree preferred. A minimum of two years' of work experience is required, preferably providing clerical and administrative support in an office environment to a high-profile manager.
Candidates must demonstrate strong verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills. Experience drafting letters and other business documents is essential. Candidates must possess strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced office environment. The ability to disseminate information into precise and effective written communications is essential.
Candidates must be self-starters with the ability to work independently and with initiative. Must also have the ability to learn new applications quickly.
Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, spelling and grammar. Work experience supporting a sales-team or in a fast-paced team environment is preferred. Work or volunteer experience with a nonprofit and/or volunteer management experience is a plus. Database experience with FileMaker Pro and/or Blackbaud is strongly preferred. Travel management experience highly desired. Budgeting/accounting experience is a plus.
