Job Summary
Responsible for drawing blood on patients, performing necessary in-house testing, and preparing specimens sent to reference lab
Essential Job Functions
1. Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products.
2. Performs venipuncture using vacutainer, syringe and butterfly techniques; capillary punctures using heel and finger stick techniques on patients. Identifies and labels specimens.
3. Conducts designated laboratory testing.
4. Instructs patients on urine collection procedures. Allocates urine specimens.
5. Cleans and sterilizes equipment, instruments, and work area.
6. Inventories supplies and places orders.
7. Enters laboratory data into computer system.
8. Maintains patient confidentiality.
9. Data enters is accurate and timely.
10. Monitors biohazard waste
11. Ensures preventive maintenance is performed on all equipment and monitors.
12. Responses timely to abnormal and panic values.
13. Maintains knowledge of all routine container and minimum volumes required for specimen collection.
14. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Education, Experience & Skills
§ High school graduate or GED equivalent required
§ 1 or more years of related experience required
§ National certification or registration as Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist
§ Computer literacy required.
§ Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform routine blood and urine tests required.
§ Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks required.
§ Knowledge of medical terminology required.
§ Skill in operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation required.
§ Maintains all materials for collection required.
§ Skill in preparing written reports concerning the results of laboratory tests and input data into computer system required.
§ Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public required.
§ Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions required.
§ Ability to follow written protocols.
§ Ability to work independently required.
§ Good communication and customer service skills required.
Preferred Education, Experience & Skills
§ 2 or more years of experience in a medical setting preferred
§ CLA or ASCP Certified
Physical & Mental Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 100pounds
Ability to push or pull heavy objects using up to 300pounds of force
Ability to stand for extended periods of time
Ability to use fine motor skills to operate equipment and/or machinery
Ability to use logical reasoning for simple and complex problem solving
Occasionally requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids
