Dow Automotive Lab Technician
Kelly Scientific Resources is currently seeking a Dow Automotive Lab Technician in the Emissions R&D Organization for a long term contract opportunity on-site at the Dow Chemical Company (dowful) in Midland, Michigan.
This position is within the Dow Automotive: Emissions R&D organization and it supports the Diesel Particulate Filter program. The emissions technology is developing a new Product and Applications Development capability to support the launch and future development s of Diesel Particulate Filter products. The purpose of this role is to accelerate Dow's ability to fabricate product parts to supply to customers for their developments, to provide start-up support for the Midland production plant, and to provide parts for internal testing and performance validation. The incumbent contractor will participate with a team to develop the prototype fabrication facility, to participate in the fabrication of prototypes filter products, and to assist with the performance testing of those products.
Primary Responsibilities:
' Visual and mechanical inspection of ceramic segment building blocks for cracks, plugging defects, target length, bow, chips, missing channels utilizing paper or electronic method for tracking parts
' Preparation of assembly matrix - placement of building blocks to provide consistent seam width, and defect free center face area, Para film faces and assembly tracking
' Preparation of assembly cement ' fiber screening, mixing via ball mills, hand and Ross mixer
' Part assembly ' 'gluing' filter segments together to a net block shape maintaining consistent 2mm seam width
' Part Shaping and Skinning ' cut assembled block to net shape using band saw or lathe and skin by hand or lathe.
' Final patch of damaged areas or cleaning of face prior to final firing of ceramic filter
' Final part - visual inspection (cracks, shape, skin via light table and laser sheet visualization), dimensional, and property measurements (pressure drop)
Secondary Responsibilities:
' Participate with the team in setting up the initial facility for fabricating the DPF parts
' Assist in day to day operations to manage parts logistics including managing inventory of raw materials, transporting materials to other building son site, assisting with work in the R&D labs of 1776 building. Develop ability to shape and skin the fabricated parts using a band saw and lathe technology
Skills Required:
Candidate should have good mechanical skills and ability to operate small hand tools, band saw, drill, and rotating mechanical equipment, such as lathes. High attention to detail and quality is a must without being too time consuming for perfection. High regard for individual and group safety is a must. The employee is expected to follow specific outlined procedures as well oral instructions and is encourage and expected to participate in idea generation, process improvement and implementation. The employee will be a member of a developmental team with some demanding time lines. The employee must have the ability to work independently as well as efficiently and effectively with other technicians, engineers and scientists. Good oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills is expected with familiarity Microsoft Office applications of excel, word and outlook.
