POSITION SUMMARY:
The practice of Respiratory Care under the direct supervision of a medical
director, and department director; performs, management, and care of patients
with deficiencies and abnormalities which affect the pulmonary system and
associated aspects of cardiopulmonary and other systems function within the
scope of practice of Respiratory Care Practice Act 1996. The Respiratory
Therapist performs a variety of technical procedures that require independent
judgment of initiative to apply prescribed treatments and testing in a safe,
professional manner. The Respiratory Therapist is a certified or registered
therapist who is accountable and responsible for the delivery of direct
respiratory care to all age ranges of patients from neonates to adults and
through the assignment and direction of the Patient Care Leader, utilizing a
collaborative care patient management process, meeting established standards of
respiratory care and integrating other health care team members.
�Respiratory Care� defined (RCP PRACTICE ACT 1996):
� Direct and indirect pulmonary care services that are safe, aseptic,
preventative, and restorative to the patient.
� Direct and indirect respiratory care services, including but not limited to,
the administration of pharmacological and diagnostic and therapeutic agents
related to respiratory care procedures necessary to implement a treatment,
disease prevention, pulmonary rehabilitative or diagnostic regimen prescribed by
a physician and surgeon.
� Observation and monitoring of signs and symptoms, general behavior, general
physical response to respiratory care treatment and diagnostic testing and
(1) determination of whether such signs, symptoms, reactions, behavior or
general response exhibit abnormal characteristics;
(2) implementation based on observed abnormalities of appropriate reporting or
referral or respiratory care protocols, or changes in treatment regimen,
pursuant to a prescription by a physician and surgeon or the initiation of
emergency procedures.
� The diagnostic and therapeutic use of any of the following, in accordance with
the prescription of a physician and surgeon: administration of medical gases,
exclusive of general anesthesia; aerosols; humidification; environmental control
systems and baromedical therapy; pharmacologic agents related to respiratory
care procedures; mechanical or physiological ventilatory support;
bronchopulmonary hygiene; cardiopulmonary resuscitation; maintenance of the
natural airways; insertion without cutting tissues and maintenance of artificial
airways; diagnostic and testing techniques required for implementation of
respiratory care protocols; collection of specimens of blood; collection of
specimens from the respiratory tract; analysis of blood gases and respiratory
secretions.
� The transcription and implementation of the written and verbal orders of a
physician and surgeon pertaining to the practice of respiratory care.
'Respiratory care protocols' as used in this section means policies
and protocols developed by a licensed health facility through collaboration,
when appropriate, with administrators, physicians and surgeons, registered
nurses, physical therapists, respiratory care practitioners, and other licensed
health care practitioners.
POSITION REQUIRES:
A. Current California State Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
B. Holds a CRTT or RRT credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory
Care, RRT preferred.
C. Minimum of one year experience in the acute care setting to include critical
care.
D. Current BCLS card.
E. Pulmonary diagnostics to included ABG certification and quality control.
F. Prefer:
1. Neonatal Intensive Care experience
2. EKG competency certified
3. Membership in a professional organization: CSRC, AARC
G. NICU requirements.
1. New NICU therapists:
a. Must complete a formal neonatal respiratory course at a JRCTE approved one or
two year college program, with didactic and clinical coursework; or
1. Complete the didactic portion of the above course and complete a minimum of
four weeks of precepted neonatal clinical experience in a hospital-based course
at a facility with a Community or Regional NICU.
2. Experienced NICU therapists:
a. must have at least one year of clinical experience in a Level II of Level III
NICU.
3. Prefer Perinatal/Pediatric certified.
4. Current NRP card
H. PALS completion within six months of hire for full and part-time staff.
