Description
Structural Mechanics
Position Title: Consulting Engineer – Structural Mechanics MS/PhD
Brief Business Summary:
The Engineering Mechanics group develops unique mechanical test methods and conducts advanced engineering measurements and computerized structural mechanics, heat transfer and fluid flow simulations in support of the development of new products and processes. Further, they provide program development and support to marketing in the area of end-use product design and development for customers.
Job Description / Responsibilities :
Work responsibilities include the application of FEA modeling software and other analytical methods to various businesses for R&D programs, and in the design and analysis of new products and mechanical processes particularly where it involves the use of materials. Guidance on design may involve travel to the plant and vendor sites. Working with CAE designers and engineers is important to develop and improve equipment design. The work also includes development of unique FEA applications to simulate manufacturing processes and nonlinear analysis of advanced materials and structures. Examples include: simulation of ballistics events such as for soft body and hard armor, blast and storm events such as for safety glass and storm rooms, modeling of tire construction, cooling and thermal fatigue of electronic components, burst and tear resistance of medical packaging, and structural and thermal analysis of polymer processing equipment. Some travel (typically less than a week per month) both U.S. and International may be involved.

Requirements
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated knowledge in Mechanical Engineering such as a Masters or PhD degree with 5+ years of experience including knowledge in the following technologies and skill areas:
· Physics and non-linear structural mechanics, including contact and buckling.
· Advanced material modeling including plasticity, non-linear elasticity and visco-elasticity
· Major FEA codes, particularly ABAQUS and ABAQUS/Explicit.
· Modeling and pre/post-processing codes, such as PATRAN, ABAQUS/CAE and PRO/E.
· Practical engineer expertise
· Stress and dynamic test methods.
· Integration of measurements and computerized mechanical simulations.
· Skill with Windows based computer hardware and software
· Vibration and dynamics analysis including normal modes, forced response and transient dynamics.
· The ability, knowledge, and experience “to frame the problem;" that is to determine when an FEA model is or is not needed, and to know what can be done practically with FEA codes.
· Skill in solving complex technical problems.
· The ability to work on several programs simultaneously, including a mixture of projects with some as short as one hour to one day and some as long as several months.
· The ability to interface with business partners and generate, define, and develop technical programs.
· Excellent written and oral communications and PowerPoint expertise.
