Description

Summary

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Information Technology Services at the Glendale Campus. This position will offer direct support to the Telecommunications and Networking areas of the department. The individual is responsible for a wide range of activities related to the stable and efficient operation of the network infrastructure on which the University depends. The individual’s focus is on day-to-day tasks encompassing data and voice networks, wired and wireless technology, expansion projects, and first-level problem investigation.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Installs and configures a variety of network devices as per established specifications. Diagnoses and rectifies normal problems using established procedures.  This includes network switches, hubs, PoE midspans, wireless access points, and other related networking equipment. Keeps all network devices stable with updated firmware.
  • Plans and executes cable installations including Cat 3, 5e, 6, and fiber optics cable. Installs support structures such as J-hooks, support rings, cable slings, and cable tray/ladder racks.
  •  Responsible for day to day operation of the Telephone and Voice Mail systems.
  • Performs phone service moves, additions, and changes.
  • Perform corrective maintenance and installation of new station equipment and routine maintenance on the University’s Telephone and Voice Mail systems along with systems backups.
  • Uses computer, monitoring, and testing equipment to determine network component performance.
  • Performs installation, configuration, and maintenance of security cameras. Configures and maintains such devices within security surveillance solution.
  • Participates in voice and data expansion projects, this includes procurement of goods and services through third-party vendors.
  • Responsible to produce reliable and accurate documentation for all aspects of the job. Cross trains with other members of the telecommunications and networking areas.
  • Provides support to other technicians in working with projects that involve any of the areas of responsibility listed above.
  •  Work collaboratively in an integrated team under limited supervision.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Responsible to produce reliable and accurate documentation for all aspects of the job. Cross trains with other members of the telecommunications and networking areas.
  • Provides support to other technicians in working with projects that involve any of the areas of responsibility listed above.
  • Work collaboratively in an integrated team under limited supervision.
Requirements

Excellent understanding of basic telecommunication and networking concepts such as TCP/IP and other routing protocols, network cable types, network topologies, and basic principles and terminology used in the network planning, installation and monitoring

 

Other Qualifications:

  • Must enjoy working with the public and have a strong initiative to work independently
  • Must be able to work in a quiet environment, learn detailed procedures, and handle a reasonable amount of stress.

  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, technical, and organizational skills required.

 

Education and/or Experience:                                           

High school graduate or GED required.  BS or BA in Computer Science or a related area is highly preferred.  Three or more years experience in a telecommunication and networking technology support highly preferred.  Working experience supporting faculty in a higher education environment highly desirable.
