Systems Safety Engineer
JOB PURPOSE
· To define System Safety Requirements.
· To analyze & evaluate designs to verify compliance with Safety Requirements.
· To track and record the closure of all processes & tests that verify the safety of delivered hardware and software.
KEY JOB FUNCTIONS
· Define safety requirements by evaluating & defining railway operational hazards that could
be caused by the ATC system.
· Verifies the safety of both hardware and software products and the system to be performing:
· - Failure Modes, Effects & Criticality Analysis (FMECA) - Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- Hazard Analysis - Event Tree Analysis - Operating & Support Hazard Analysis (O&SHA).
· Evaluates the safety of designs and design changes for both hardware and software by
reviewing technical specifications, designs & Engineering Change Control documentation.
· Identifies & evaluates safety problems, suggests design alternatives where appropriate to enhance safety based on a knowledge of design feasibility & the safety requirements.
· Provides evaluations & recommendations with respect to safety in formal design reviews.
· Assures that safety requirements are met by participating in hardware, software and field tests.
· Supervises consultants by defining their work, coaching them on who and what to prepare, monitoring their progress and directing them on priorities.
· Resolves safety related issues by participating in the Safety Committee, as required.
· Ensures that safety can be verified. Approves of test documentation.
· Prepares Safety Reports that document Project Safety requirements have been met. Safety test procedures & test results are reviewed and checked to confirm compliance with the requirements. Software process records, operational restrictions and safety analyses are similarly reviewed, checked and identified in the report.
· Proposes Work Package estimates and descriptions based on knowledge of the project work requirements.

Requirements
BASIC SKILL LEVEL REQUIREMENTS
· B.Sc. Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
· 5+ years relevant working experience.
· Railway systems experience an asset.
· Knowledge of reliability and safety analysis techniques.
· Excellent command of the English language, both written and oral.
· Computer skills: MS Word, Excel, & Access.
· Familiarity with military specifications.
