Description A Federally Funded Alternative Teacher Preparation Program

MSMaRT is a partially-funded 31 credit-hour post-baccalaureate teacher certification program designed to help you become fully credentialed and employed in a reduced period of time.

It includes:

  • an 11-week pre-employment program designed to help you acquire a beginning repertoire of pedagogical skills;
  • ongoing university coursework that exposes you to critical content including national and local curriculum standards, learning theory, and inquiry; employment as a highly-qualified and certified math or science middle school teacher in PGCPS – ½ time during the first year and full-time thereafter; &
  • an induction and mentoring component that supports you transition into your new profession.

During your first year in the MSMaRT residency in PGCPS you will teach half-time which provides you the time needed for collaboration, reflection, and completion of ongoing university coursework, as well as earning a half-time teacher salary.

Requirements
1. GPA: The UMD Graduate School requires that candidates have a minimum of a 3.0 undergraduate GPA. Applicants who do not meet this requirement are still able to apply as individuals and are evaluated based on a combination of grades, professional experiences, and outlook about teaching. The minimal acceptable GPA will be 2.75, the MSDE established minimum for MAAPP applicants.

2. Test Scores: Applicants must have passed Praxis I, or the MSDE specified equivalent (e.g., SAT scores), before their file will be reviewed for admission. Applicants will not be admitted conditionally or provisionally based on Praxis I. In addition, candidates must also have passing scores prior to the beginning of the program in June on both Praxis II content area tests for which they seek certification (mathematics or science and one additional content area). Any student who has not passed Praxis II must ask for an exception to policy and there is no guarantee an exception will be made.

3. Letters of Recommendation: Applicants need to submit 3 letters of recommendation that can be submitted by professors or others who can assess the quality of the applicant''''s prior academic performance and/or their experience working with young adolescents.

4. Goal Statement: Applicants must submit an essay describing their interest in becoming a public school teacher in PGCPS and their academic, professional, and extracurricular experiences that led them to your decision to apply.

5. Interview: All candidates must interview in person. The interview will be scheduled in the weeks following the two application deadlines. Each candidate will be interviewed by a minimum of two interviewers from UM and PGCPS. In the interviews candidates will be asked to teach the first part of a lesson and to analyze middle school student work in science or mathematics.

6. In addition, applicants must meet the MSDE middle school certification intake guidelines for resident teachers in two content areas to be admitted. Candidates must have 30 hours of content as prescribed in the Guidelines for Implementing Alternative Preparation Programs. Candidates will need to demonstrate content depth and breadth in two of the four core areas of study in middle school - English, mathematics, science and social studies, with the following requirements within that 30 hours:

15 hours of easily identifiable math hours, with no more than three to be drawn from related subjects, for a total of 15
