Overview:

The Global Application Tooling Division (GATD) of Tyco Electronics is currently seeking a Skilled Trades Supervisor to join our team.  We have 2 openings available, one on our 2nd shift from 2:45pm to 11:15pm and one on our 3rd shift from 10:45pm to 7:15am.  GATD is a worldwide engineering and manufacturing business unit that designs and manufactures application equipment, tooling and precision machined products for all markets.  Ours is a dynamic work environment where you can capture every bit of potential and possibility out of your career. The Skilled Trades Supervisor role is responsible for World Class leadership of the manufacturing work force in the Waynesboro, PA production facility.  Primary focus of the Skilled Trades Supervisor role is to operate as a front line supervisor in our production machine shop, converting raw materials into finished goods at a cost, quality and quantity consistent with corporate, division and plant objectives.  Person(s) performing this role are models for the Tyco Electronics core values of Integrity, Accountability, Teamwork, and Innovation.  While functioning in this role you will be expected to operate at the highest standards of individual and corporate integrity, honor all commitments made while taking personal responsibility for actions/results, and foster an environment that encourages innovation, creativity, excellence and results through teamwork.  Our organization strives to practice leadership that teaches, inspires, and promotes full participation of all employees combined with a foundational belief in continuous career development.  This position reports directly to the production supervisor (Machining).

Responsibilities & Qualifications:

Responsibilities 

  • Insures that all safety standards, energy conservation, and emergency evacuation programs are followed.  Keeps all plant leadership informed of unusual or anticipated safety issues.  Improves working conditions where possible.
  • Leads, the manufacturing work force to make optimum effective utilization of manpower, time, materials and equipment within budgetary requirements.  Champions the goal to produce products at a cost, quality and quantity consistent with company, division and plant objectives.
  • Accountable for both the individual and overall productivity of shift managed thru use of measurement metrics such as recovery and standard production hours earned
  • Recognizes production control is the link to our customers and in being so provides the production plan for the plant to follow.  Skilled Trades Supervisor honors this by implementing the production schedule flawlessly.  Drives to adhere to the production schedule thru use of the dispatch list tool, unwaveringly follows the dispatch list top down   When unable to execute the given production schedule this position is responsible to champion the corrective action required, thus minimizing any (and all) deviation from the schedule.  Dependability to implement an effective production schedule is core to this position.
  • Interfaces with production control, manufacturing/quality/product engineering and other related functions to discuss problems and transmit/receive information relative to production specifications, deviations, method/procedure changes and/or other related subjects to solve production problems, drive improvements, and maintain a high quality level.
  • Provides for the compilation of daily and monthly reports such as productivity and scrap records, machine/operator rates, set-up rates, and wip inventories as requested. Discusses production performance with plant leadership to effect changes and improvements as required.
  • The Tyco Electronics Operating Advantage, or TEOA, is a company-wide improvement program designed to improve productivity, reduce costs and ultimately deliver greater satisfaction to our customers and value to our shareholders.  The Skilled Trades Supervisor position will team with the business unit TEOA (Lean) Leader and the entire plant leadership team to deploy TEOA within the facility.  Challenges will include developing the site-level Current State Value Stream Map (VSM), Future State VSM and TEOA deployment plan based on site assessment needs identification.  Overall goal is to effectively implement continuous improvement thru proven methods and achieve ever more challenging plant performance objectives (Star levels)
  • Coordinates with maintenance on issues related to production machinery and tooling.  This includes the scheduling of repairs in accordance with production commitments.  Supports a formal preventative maintenance program
  • Ensures that production equipment is properly staffed and that adequate/trained personnel at all levels are available to effectively carry out production operations and meet production schedules.  Responsible for proper training and instruction of employees in machine/equipment use and proper procedures/methods
  • Conducts periodic meetings to insure that the team supervised and other interrelated personnel are well versed in their duties and responsibilities.  Delegates authority in line with such responsibilities. Keeps abreast of changes in the production field making recommendations to manufacturing engineering on new equipment, procedures and processes as applicable.
  • Prepares periodic (and timely) employee evaluation reports and reviews these with the employees. Discusses employee performance with production supervisor/plant manager.
  • Teams with Human Resources to administer Company and local plant policies concerning hiring, promotions, disciplining, transferring, discharges and other related areas.  Recommends the selection of employees for advanced positions and insures that they are familiar with job duties and responsibilities.
  • Be visible, accessible, and able to foster a work environment based on trust, candor, and respect using personal skills and influence to lead, empower, and enable others to achieve by maximizing the commitment of all.

Qualifications & Experience 

  • 3+ years demonstrated supervisory / management success - preference given to multi shift experience
  • BS/BA Degree preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication/interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project Management
  • Ability to multi-task and react quickly to changing priorities
  • Six Sigma/Lean Manufacturing experience
  • Flexibility and willingness to change as business conditions require
  • Sense of urgency combined with strong attention to detail
  • Proven record of driving innovation by promoting employee engagement while performing deployment leadership
  • Ideal candidate has extraordinary knowledge of complex machining processes in the traditional metalworking disciplines of milling, grinding, turning, drilling, tapping, boring, edm, etc.  Intimate understanding of CNC machine tools/machining carries a distinct advantage in the Skilled Trades Supervisor role.
