Description
Job Purpose:

The Buyer is responsible for managing the Merchandising and Marketing functions of specific categories within the guidelines of the Tractor Supply Company Business Plan and the Merchandising Strategic Category Management Plan. This includes product selection, vendor negotiations, competitive analysis, developing specific marketing plans, and defining a strategic business plan for each category.

Primary Duties:


  • Develops and communicates a comprehensive strategic business plan and budget for categories to support the Merchandising Strategic Category Management Plan aimed at maximizing the financial contribution made by each category. Is responsible for the financial performance of each category as it relates to budgeted sales, gross margin, inventory, inventory turnover, and GMROI.

  • Negotiates with Vendor Partners all aspects of merchandising program. Topics to be considered are: assortment plans, product cost, packaging, retail pricing, logistics, terms of payment, marketing support funds, EDI related topics, new store discounts, volume rebates and more.

  • Serves as primary contact with our vendors to build mutually beneficial partnerships with our suppliers.

  • Identifies new, on-strategy products and categories to drive top line sales.

  • Executes to the Company planned Sales Driving Initiatives.

  • Works with Marketing to plan the marketing and advertising of products within each assigned category aimed at driving sales, maximizing, profit, increasing awareness, and attracting our core customers. Topics to be considered: television, print advertising (circulars) direct mail website, POP and more.

  • Works with the Marketing on the strategic planning, development and execution of private label programs.

  • Works with Merchandise Presentation to maximize sales and gross margin dollars per square foot utilizing POP, space allocation and product presentation.

  • Works with Global Sourcing to identify and execute expanded import programs for maximum value delivery to our customers.

  • Oversees the hiring, supervision, training, evaluation, and continuous development of the Merchandise Planner and the Merchandise Administrator in duties and responsibilities.
    • For those Buyers asked to share a Merchandise Administrator, they need to work collegially with their peers on the use and management of this resource.



  • Establishes and maintains communication with internal department, management, stores, and the vendor community.
    • Primary point of contact within merchandising for vendor community.



  • Visits TSC stores, competition, and other retailers in various markets to determine regional assortment opportunities, and other market needs.
    • Use Vendor supplied market research, TSC-supplied market research, feedback from the Field, and feedback from their Marketing Teams to provide opportunities for performance optimization.



  • Attends trade shows, conventions, and makes vendor factory visits (current and potential) as necessary to evaluate current assortments and ensure Tractor Supply�s desire to be �First to Market�.

  • Primary responsibility for cost and retail management, including vendor cost changes and retail price optimization.



Secondary Duties:


  • Travel for import buying trips as we look to enhance our value proposition to our customers.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by a supervisor.


Requirements
Education and Experience:

Bachelor�s degree from an accredited college or university; 3-5 years prior merchandising experience and/or retail experience preferred; any suitable combination of education and experience will be considered.

Essential Skills:


  • Displays strong and demonstrated leadership, communication, and problem solving capabilities.

  • Ability to work independently, positively handle conflict, and work in a fast paced environment.

  • Display detail-oriented approach to work.

  • Ability and proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Office products.

  • Ability to manipulate data to drive and expedite project analyses and completion.

  • Ability to work overtime and travel occasionally.



Working Conditions and Physical Demands:


Individuals in this position will encounter ambient room temperatures, lighting, and traditional office equipment as found in any typical office environment. Individuals may need to sit at a desk or table for long periods of time; to speak clearly and carefully listen to customers; to reach over shoulder heights; crouch or stoop below the waist; repetitive wrist, hand, or finger movement; occasional lifting up to 25 pounds; and lifting as required to file documents or store materials during the workday.
