Senior OR Tech or OR Tech - Surgical Services

Description The 47-bed Novato Community Hospital is a not-for-profit, general acute care hospital accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Serving its community since 1961, the hospital affiliated with Sutter Health in 1985. Novato Community Hospital works in close partnership with Marin General Hospital to provide for the health care needs of more than 64,000 North Marin County residents. In 2001 Novato Community Hospital opened a $40 million replacement hospital and medical office building on the Novato Medical Campus. Senior OR Tech:
Under the direct supervision of the RN, this position performs a variety of duties in the operating room to assist the surgical team.  The incumbent acts as a Senior Technician, providing functional guidance to the surgical services technical staff.  Functions as a member of the Sterile Team, creating and maintaining a sterile field and issuing instruments to surgeons in a high-risk environment.  Assists other personnel before, during and after each surgical procedure, and serves as a technical resource for all members of the OR team.  Responsible for assisting in in-services to staff and with orientation of new personnel.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Sets up tables, instruments, and supplies required for specific operations
• Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative
• Prepares and passes instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies needed in the operative procedure and maintains a correct count
• Assist in maintenance and care of specimens
• Decontaminates all equipment, instruments and supplies and cleans carts and rooms and changes linens
• Assists with table equipment, positioning patients, application of plaster casts and dressings, prepares and maintains the sterile field for the surgical  procedure

 
 OR Tech:
Under the direct supervision of the RN, does a variety of duties in the operating room to assist the surgical team.  Functions as a member of the Sterile Team, creating and maintaining a sterile field and issuing instruments to surgeons in a high-risk environment.  Assists other personnel before, during and after each surgical procedure as needed.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 

•  Assists with circulating duties, as assigned, in operating room
• Orders & maintains par levels of assorted specialty items
• Under direction of RN, utilizes knowledge of surgical instruments & anticipates needs of surgical team
• Assists & maintains surgical instruments & equipment
• Maintains knowledge of & practices proper sterilization & infection control procedures
• Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, & equipment necessary for individual procedures
• Assists during surgeries by handing instruments to surgical team &/or holding & using retractors, as required during procedure
• Prepares decontaminated instrumentation for Central Supply processing 

 
 
 

Requirements Senior OR Tech  
 

       Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
Satisfactory completion of Operating Room or Surgical Technician course preferred.
Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology courses or equivalent education/experience required.
 

       Experience: Current experience and demonstrated proficiency as an Operating Room Technologist required.
This position requires extensive experience in the use of surgical instruments and equipment.  Demonstrated competence in performing scrub functions on all procedures at NCH.  Such "seasoned" experience would normally be acquired by performing Operating Room Technologist duties for approximately five years.
 

       Knowledge: Must have in-depth knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment.  Must have ability to read, write and understand the English language in order to communicate quickly and effectively with surgical team and others.  Basic computer skills required.
 

       Special Skills/Equipment: Must have demonstrated skills in the use of surgical instruments and equipment, including all scopes and video systems.  Demonstrated leadership skills in providing staff education related to surgical instruments, equipment and procedures.  Ability to serve as a resource and role model to Operation Room Technologists.  Must have verbal and written communication skills.  Demonstrated competency in performing selected psychomotor skills according to written standards, policies and procedures at Novato Community Hospital.  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with peers, physicians and other hospital and department staff.
 
License/Registration/Certification: Must be BLS certified within six months of employment
Must be certified in operation of Steris sterilization system.
 
 
OR Tech
 
Education:
High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
Satisfactory completion of Operation Room or Surgical Technician course preferred.

Experience:
Current experience and demonstrated proficiency as an Operation Room Technologist required.
 
License/Registion/Certification:
BLS certified within six months of employment.
 
Knowledge: 
Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment.  Must have the ability to read, write, and understand the English language in order to communicate quickly and effectively with surgical team and others.  Computer literacy preferred.
