Category Manager - MAPCO

Mapco, a fully owned subsidiary of Delek (NYSE – DK), operates approximately 480 C-stores with gas stations in 8 states in the Southeast. The company is headquartered in Brentwood TN. Annual in-store revenues are app. $400M.

The company has grown through acquisitions and is focused on assets consolidation, developing a strong operational structure, improving efficiencies and increasing profit dollars. Mapco has developed a strong brand image, and is steadfast in its approach to implementing a total reimage program across the company.

Mapco is a low cost operator with a lean staffing structure, which allows them to maintain flexibility, and fast decision making and implementation capabilities. The company leverages these capabilities to gain strategic advantages in today’s competitive marketplace. As part of their overall strategic sales and gross profit growth plans, Mapco is focused on adding infrastructure and talent to its current category management department.

Job Purpose

Mapco is seeking a Category Manager who will report to the VP of Sales and Merchandising. The successful candidate will have overall accountability for critical analysis of sales and profit results, promotional activity, market trends, consumer shopping behaviors, demographic product alignment, and strategic growth planning.

This role requires an articulate individual who possess a strong cognitive intellect and the ability to interact with varying levels of management inside and outside the company. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing short-term and long-term strategic category sales and profit growth plans
  • Developing category promotional plans
  • Analyzing sales and profit trends
  • Evaluating promotional activity
  • Reviewing consumer shopping behaviors

    A successful candidate will:

    Short term (by the end of 2009)
    1. Solidify short-term plans to achieve 2009 monthly budgets
    2. Develop 2010 Strategic Category plans and budgets
    3. Evaluate current category assortment
    4. Develop category metrics for success

    Long term
    1. Achieve category sales and profitability budgets
    2. Enhance store level profitability by means of precise SKU assortment and inventory levels
    3. Develop long-term strategic category plans

    Candidate Profile

    The ideal candidate for this position is experienced in data-based decision making—preferably in the retail industry—and has experience in negotiating pricing, contracts, or promotional activity.
    Specific competencies being sought include:

  • Analytical. Must possess strong cognitive analytical skills, and have the ability to absorb and translate data-driven analysis into constructive information.

  • Team Work. Able to foster and build business partnerships with other category managers, marketing team members, and the operations team.
  • Judgment. Makes decisions that balance a variety of factors (e.g., cost, risk, short-term vs. long-term impact) to achieve optimal outcome.
  • Hands on approach. Enjoys the challenge of being personally involved and doing whatever is needed to meet objectives.
  • Strong Work Ethics. Mapco stores are operated 24/7 and the successful candidate will be dedicated to doing whatever it takes to be successful. Must have a high degree of energy and enthusiasm for the products and the success of the business.
  • Facilitator. Understands how to make things happen in a corporate environment. Knows how to navigate between different needs, views and reach consensus.
  • Vision. Is expected to set both the vision and the strategy for inside sales categories.
  • Tenacity/Persistence. Holds steadfast to a view of what must be done. Pursues goals despite significant obstacles, resistance or competition from others. Must be both persuasive and tactful.
