Description The Nurse Manager is responsible for the clinical leadership and coordination of all nursing personnel. Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Nurse Manager will assure quality nursing care utilizing the nursing process, as outlined by the Colorado Nurse Practice Act. The Nurse Manager is responsible for developing unit goals, objectives and Standards of Performance. Develops, coordinates and implements clinical and program activities.

JOB RESPONSIBLITIES:

1. Under the supervision of the CNO makes routine employment decisions and supervises, coordinates, and evaluates the work of professional and non-professional clinical personnel.
2. Under the supervision of the CNO, schedules and assigns staff according to patient needs; guides and advises subordinates as necessary.
3. Assists in operating the department within defined limitations; reports and exhibits variances.
4. Coordinates unit activities with Medical Staff and other departments of the Hospital.
5. Maintains optimal standards of clinical care and constantly evaluates results.
6. Assists and maintains performance improvement program.
7. Provides clinical and administrative leadership.
8. Promotes an environment in which patient care team can work cooperatively toward objectives.
9. Promotes a clean, safe and secure environment for patient care on assigned unit(s).
10. Assists in administering the unit philosophy of clinical services and in defining and developing overall long and short-range objectives.
11. Assumes and/or performs additional duties as requested and makes sound decisions within the range of expectation for the job.
12. Promotes a positive working environment and guest relations.
13. Coordinates the utilization of nursing personnel to meet the acuity needs of each clinical area.
14. Assures compliance with all standards and policies of the Facility.
15. Provides communication of changing clinical or reportable conditions to appropriate administrative personnel.
16. Provides leadership through assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of nursing services provided in each clinical area.
17. Supports and participates in hospital-wide Quality Improvement activities.
18. Development, implementation and evaluation of education programs designed to meet the competency needs of nursing and clinical staff.
19. Ongoing monitoring and documentation of employee compliance with designated aspects of infection control and work safety, in collaboration with the Infection Control Coordinator, Loss Control Coordinator and the Risk Manager.
20. Interacts with and assists in teaching staff.
21. Assumes responsibility for professional development and ongoing education.
22. Serves as a clinical resource person to staff members in their daily activities.
Requirements EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse through the State of Colorado Board of Registered Nursing. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing or baccalaureate program or psychology. Experience in planning and implementing educational programming. Experience with clinical infection control practices. 2-3 years of Management Experience.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

1) Must be self-directed and willing to assume decision-making responsibilities.
2) Must have working knowledge of aseptic techniques, prevention and control of communicable diseases, safe work practices and basics management skills.
3) Must stay current with federal, state, and local healthcare standards, policies and procedures for workplace health and safety.
4) Must have the ability to maintain working relationships with medical staff.
5) Must have sound clinical judgment and critical thinking skills.
6) Must have good record-keeping and organizational skills.
7) Must be able to perform concentrated and/or complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and/or highly technical situations;
8) Must be able to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;
9) Must be able to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;
10) Must be able to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures;
11) Must be able to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion;
12) Must be capable of adapting to varying workloads an work assignments on a constant basis;
13) Must have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.
14) Must have math skills to perform calculation of drug dosages and infusion rates.
15) Must possess a valid Colorado Drivers License in order to transport patients and/or staff, or drive hospital vehicles.

 
GENERAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Working conditions for all employees are as follows, but not limited to a psychiatric hospital setting; some risk involved in the event of aggressive patient(s); work load may include day, evening, night, weekend and/or holiday shifts. The Employee Health Nurse is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, blood borne pathogens, and loud noise levels.
