INSTITUTIONAL NURSE - RCRMC

Job Description

The Riverside County Regional Medical Center (RCRMC) has need for experienced Registered Nurses to work at the Detention Health Facility in Banning & Riverside. The Institutional Nurse will assist Physicians and provide medical services to inmates in adult detention centers and juvenile halls located throughout Riverside County.


Location: Banning & Riverside

Under direction, and in accordance with the State of California Nurse Practice Act, and to provide professional nursing care for individuals detained at a Riverside County Sheriff/Probation confinement or detention facilities and to perform related work as required.

This is the journey level class for registered nurses who provide basic routine and emergency nursing services in an institutional setting. Incumbents of positions are assigned to Riverside County Regional Medical Center-Detention Health Services (RCRMC-DHS) Department to perform the entire range of professional nursing duties with a minimum of assistance or supervision from other medical personnel.

This class report to the Senior Institutional Nurse and/or Supervising Institutional Nurse or designee. The class differs from Senior Institutional Nurse in that the latter provides technical supervision to a nursing staff working various shifts to provide nursing care to adults and/or juvenile detained in the facility.

The class differs from Supervising Institutional Nurse in that the latter supervises a number of professional nurses, and has charge of a nursing program which may encompass more than one detention facility. Administrative supervision such as planning, organizing, and overall direction is provided by the Supervising Institutional Nurse.
 EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (Depending on the area of assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following)

• Plans and provides professional nursing care to minor or adults in a detention facility; including administration of medication, therapeutic agents, treatments, disease prevention, and restorative measures ordered by a physician; performs physical examinations; responds to patient court orders as appropriate and implement approved standardized nurse protocols as directed; ongoing basic monitor of inmate/minors physical and psychosocial status.

• Evaluates effectiveness of nursing care and treatment regimen; collaborates with physician and other health care providers; refers inmates/minors to appropriate health care providers; provides clinical supervision of other nursing staff to ensure quality care; monitors work areas for safety and cleanliness.

• Initiates treatment in medical emergencies; conducts quality control audits, dresses minor wounds.

• Assists physicians in conducting sick calls and carry out their orders. Examine and treat patients; assists physicians with medical and/or minor procedures. Makes routine medical observations on a daily basis, and refers patients to physician as necessary.

• Charts treatment of patients, and records and reports significant changes in condition in progress notes; maintains patient records, medical data and confidential information.

• Advises staff, and counsels' patients and their families regarding medical problems and proper health care methods; may instruct institutional staff in emergency first aid techniques.

• May determine restrictions on physical activities of patients according to medical standards established by the State of California.

Salary:  $24.77 - $44.59 Hourly$4,293.59 - $7,729.59 Monthly$51,523.06 - $92,755.10 Annually

Job Requirements

Education: Graduation from a recognized college with an Associate Degree in Nursing or nursing diploma program.

Experience: Two years as a registered nurse in an acute care hospital or health care agency; Experience gained as an Interim Permit Nurse may be credited toward meeting the required experience. (B.S.N.) may be substituted for one year toward meeting the required experience.

Knowledge of: The principles, techniques, and procedures used in professional nursing; medical terminology; hospital and clinic routine; the uses and effects of medicines and narcotics.

Ability to: Perform the entire range of professional nursing duties and responsibilities; plan and carry out a program of nursing care for detainees; work under limited medical supervision; prepare and maintain concise and complete records and reports; establish and maintain effective relationships with physicians, detainees, and fellow workers.
