What is an Aetna intern?
Aetna’s Undergraduate Summer Intern Program gives students a depth of experience in functional area assignments, as well as a range of experience through company-wide programs. These include classroom and e-based training, an executive speaker series, social and community service events, and a cross-functional final project. Our paid internships typically last 10-12 weeks, 40 hours a week, from May to August. Most internships are based at our corporate headquarters in Connecticut, with additional positions at Aetna offices across the country.
Our internship program offer college students like you the experience of lifetime. They give you an opportunity to use your creativity and fresh viewpoint in a health care company that thrives on change. You’ll work hard — and make a difference, too. Internships are a great way to put book knowledge to real world use. They give you a chance to explore career interests through exciting work assignments.

Leadership Development Program
Our Leadership Development Program is a fast-track rotational program that will give you the opportunity to develop your technical, business and leadership skills. This program can be the ideal way for you to accelerate your professional growth. It’s much more than just a job – it’s a potential career path.
During the program, you’ll rotate through a series of challenging projects and technical assignments within Aetna Information Services – and other Aetna business areas in our Pennsylvania and Connecticut offices. These assignments last approximately eight months each. Most participants complete the program in a 3-year timeframe.
Your rotational stops may include assignments in the following disciplines:
- Infrastructure and Networking
- Application Development
- IT Architecture
- Software Testing
- Database Management
- Project Management
- Strategic Planning
This program will give you opportunities to deliver real business results. Plus, you’ll be trained, coached and evaluated to help you achieve optimum performance. At the end of our program, successful participants will have the opportunity to explore various open positions within Aetna Information Services
Areas of Opportunity: Underwriting
With Aetna, underwriters are at the "hub" of our business. We rely on our underwriters' expertise to determine accurate, as well as acceptable, rates and fees for clients – ranging from small groups customers to large, national accounts Underwriters partner with multiple areas within the company – including marketing and operations staff -- to provide valuable, ongoing financial case management for our corporate customers.
As an Aetna underwriter, you’ll assess financial risk on a case-level basis for both new and renewal business. Working with our field staff and customers, you'll negotiate and implement rates and fees designed to achieve our profitability goals, retain and build membership and meet our customers' needs. In addition, you'll deliver high-quality products, such as financial accounting packages, financial responses to requests for proposals, claims projections, funding evaluations, and group health plan and renewal packages.
Areas of opportunity: Claims and customer service
Our customer service and claim areas represent the "face" of Aetna, serving as the important first line of contact with our customers. These professionals work directly with our members, doctors and employer groups (companies) to help them better understand our products and services and assist with timely, accurate payment of their claims, while providing a human connection at those times when it is needed most. Employees who are part of our customer service team are talented, dedicated individuals with the skills to make a difference in the lives of our customers.
Customer Service Representatives, Claim Benefits Specialists and Service Consultants work in our Customer Service Centers located across the nation. While the titles and daily tasks differ, the Customer Service Center staff experiences the same fast-paced and deadline-driven environment. Their goal is to ensure quick turnaround times and customer satisfaction.
