Position Description:
Morgan Stanley is seeking a strong Vice President for its Operational Risk Management Team. The eventual hire will work in a Firm Policy Governance role that is responsible to ensure that the Firm is current and in compliance with its various internally and externally defined policy and regulatory requirements.
Morgan Stanley’s Operational Risk Department has established an Operational Risk program and framework across the Firm to:
Assist in embedding an Operational Risk culture throughout the Firm to promote transparency and disclosure
Promote best practices to assist Business Lines in the management of Operational Risk
Ensure that requirements of investors, senior management and regulators are adequately met
Report to Board and Senior Management on operational risk issues
Key focus areas in this role will be:
Ensure that Operational Risk policies, procedures, and standards as well as charters for all related Committees are up-to-date and fully compliant with all Corporate and Regulatory requirements.
Build a solid relationship with our regulatory partners. Ensure a clear line of communication between them and us.
Provide reporting to regulators and internal Governance Oversight bodies, as necessary.
Lead coordinated responses to external requests for information regarding Firm Operational Risk practices and status.
Typically, candidates will partner with groups both within and external to Operational Risk, such as:
Operational Risk Reporting
Operational Risk Measurement
Company Law
Compliance
Internal Audit
Risk Department Management
The candidate is expected to form strong networks in order to facilitate efficient communication, coordination and information gathering.
Candidates will have:
Excellent communication skills, as the role involves a high amount of interaction with senior management and regulators.
Good organization and time management skills and the ability to prioritize effectively and meet deadlines.
A good appreciation and strong sense of risk management and the current regulatory environment (e.g. Basel II, Sarbanes Oxley, etc. preferable though not essential).
Good knowledge of the financial services industry; preferably in an investment bank with a finance, operations, technology or internal audit background.
The ideal candidate will have performed a similar capacity in a previous role.
For the coverage component of the role the individual must:
Be comfortable working with ambiguity, managing and resolving complex issues
Have a history of being able to articulate a clear message for which support is garnered
Have the ability to influence on senior level, while also being skilled at extracting requirements from subject matter experts in designated businesses
Skills Required:
Business Product Knowledge:
Understanding of financial services / sales and trading businesses / retail brokerage / investment management. Some understanding of financial processes is also expected.
Regulatory Understanding:
An understanding of the various internally and externally defined regulatory policies and procedures that govern financial services firms
Client Skills
The candidate will need to be able to interact comfortably with senior management, articulate issues clearly and succinctly and to challenge existing views.
Business/Product Knowledge:
A good understanding of financial processes is expected in order to be able to determine their impact on risk and control.
Organizational Ability
Candidates should be able plan and co-ordinate several tasks at any one time. Candidates will be expected to set and achieve deadlines for each deliverable.
Communication
The role will involve meeting with senior management within Infrastructure; experience of presenting, facilitating and gaining consensus are required.
Teamwork
The role will require working with other colleagues and creating networks with external consultancies.
Management Ability
The candidate will be responsible to manage staff members and their work-streams
Leadership
Candidates need to be able to demonstrate the ability to take ideas forward and to challenge others where appropriate. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate the ability to act with integrity, and maturity.
