Milestones:
The newspaper originally was known as The Caddo Gazette & Flag. It changed its name in 1871 to the Daily Shreveport Times. In 1877, it changed to Shreveport Daily Times, then in 1889 to The Shreveport Times. In 1928, The Times, in a historic rift, opposed Gov. Huey Long for tyrannical behavior and misuse of public funds. In 1939, a Times crusade prompted a federal investigation that resulted in former Gov. Richard Leche's conviction for mail fraud. In 1953, The Shreveport Times and The Shreveport Journal entered into a joint operating agreement which ended in 1999. To reflect its regional circulation, the name was changed to The Times in the 1970s.

The newspaper was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1976 for an investigation of the Shreveport Department of Public Safety, and again in 1989 for an in-depth look at Louisiana's education system.

About Shreveport:
Located 20 minutes from Texas, Shreveport-Bossier offers a unique blend of Louisiana Cajun heritage and Texas western culture.

A three-time All-America City winner (including 1999), the city is the national headquarters of the American Rose Society, which is housed on the 42-acre American Rose Center. The area hosts more than 40 events and festivals annually, plus it is currently one of the busiest secondary gambling markets in the country, with five riverboat casinos, including Harrah's and Horseshoe and live horse racing at Louisiana Downs. The city has been host to the last three Miss Teen USA pageants. The area is also home to the Louisiana Hayride, a Grand Ole Opry-style show and radio broadcast of the 1940s and '50s. Hank Williams was a regular performer; Johnny Cash and a young Elvis Presley also performed.

Known as "Sportsman's Paradise," excellent hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation abound. The area plays hosts to the Independence Bowl and the Shreveport-Bossier area is home to four NFL quarterbacks (Terry Bradshaw, David Woodley, Joe Ferguson, Stan Humphries) and a number of other celebrities.
