Just recently, U.S. News & World Report ranked University Hospital as the Best Metro Hospital and Best for nephrology and urology.
Also, University Hospital is the only pediatric trauma center for San Antonio and South Texas. The trauma team at University Hospital is recognized for its expertise in treating serious injuries and burns in children by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The ACS verified University Hospital as a pediatric trauma center in October 2012, after a lengthy application process and site visit.
University Health System is Bexar County and South Texas’ first and only health system to earn Magnet status. Only about six percent of U.S. hospitals have earned this prestigious designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in Washington D.C. There are currently about 360 Magnet healthcare organizations worldwide, and University Health System is the 24th in Texas. Magnet hospitals and health systems offer patients reassurance they are being cared for by a team with a proven track record for providing excellent care and positive outcomes for their patients.
University Health System is one of the largest employers in Bexar County with over 5,000 employees, nearly 700 resident physicians, and an operating budget of $947.6 million for 2012.
University Hospital, currently operating 496 beds, is one of just 15 Level I trauma centers in Texas, and the lead trauma center for all of South Texas. It is the only hospital in San Antonio able to provide expert trauma care for critically injured and burned children. The Emergency Center at University Hospital is the busiest in the region and averages nearly 70,000 visits each year. The University Transplant Center is a 2008 and 2009 Medal of Honor recipient from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and achieves patient outcomes exceeding national averages for kidney, liver and lung transplantation.
University Health System provides healthcare for families close to home at our clinic locations, including the Robert B. Green Campus, Texas Diabetes Institute, 13 neighborhood clinics across the community, five urgent-care clinics (ExpressMed) and four outpatient renal dialysis centers.
University Health System's Community First Health Plans is the region's only locally-owned and operated, not-for-profit HMO.
University Health System is also a joint owner of San Antonio AirLIFE, who provides emergency air medical transport services aboard its fleet of state-of-the-art Bell 430 helicopters.
