Children’s Hospital Colorado: Designed with Healing in Mind

Children’s Hospital Colorado opens Sept. 29 near
the intersection of I-225 and East Colfax Avenue.
A dream became reality when Children’s committed in 2001 to build a world-class medical campus on 48 acres designed to meet the specific physical and emotional needs of children and their families on the former site of Fitzsimons Army Hospital. From the beginning, our design partners, architects, physicians, nurses, employees, patients and families participated in a planning process that explored how light, touch, sound, taste and scent work together to create a healing environment.

“Everything, from the use of color, to the Colorado landscape reflected throughout the new hospital, to the innovative, sound-absorbing technology, was designed to promote a healing environment,” said Sharron van der Meulen, interior designer and principle with Zimmer, Gunsel and Frasca Architects, LLP, designers of Children’s Hospital Colorado. “We chose every design element to meet the unique needs of pediatric patients and their parents and siblings.”

The result of this collaboration — a gleaming, family-friendly facility that will benefit children for generations to come — opens September 29 at 7 a.m. Here’s a closer look at the features found in this state-of-the-art facility.

Just for Kids
Plenty of natural light and panoramic views frame the large, private rooms, while features such as hideaway desks, internet access and the latest healthcare technology at the bedside combine convenience and quality. From the moment children enter the front doors of the new hospital, they will benefit from a kid-friendly environment that reduces their anxiety and engages their senses. “Kid-level” reception counters, outdoor play areas with handicap-accessible equipment and access to video-on-demand in patient and activity rooms are just a few of the elements that make the hospital inviting for children.

The support of families
throughout the surrounding
communities helped fund Children’s Hospital Colorado —
and we think you’ll be happy
with the results.
Families First
To minimize the stress and anxiety that comes with having a child in the hospital, patient rooms are furnished with sofa beds to enable both parents to sleep in their children’s private rooms comfortably. This request was one of the most frequent pieces of feedback we received from parents.

“We spent time with families and found out what was most important to them,” said Susan Koch, RN, MSHA, director of clinical planning at Children’s. “From family lounges complete with kitchenettes and laundry facilities to playrooms for siblings, we’ve created the new hospital with these families in mind to ensure a more positive experience.”

Safe, Sound and Quiet as a Mouse
The new facility will house the most technologically advanced equipment, enabling our renowned physicians to combine their experience of meeting children’s specialized medical needs with technology to deliver the highest level of care. Among the new features is an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system. Children’s Hospital Colorado is the first pediatric hospital in the country to integrate this technology, which allows physicians and other caregivers to access patient records electronically through secure technology whether they are at their office or at Children’s. This leads to quicker diagnoses and more effective treatments for patients.

New, sound-absorbing technology uses the highest level of acoustic ceiling panels and rubber flooring to keep the neonatal intensive care unit quiet. A pinwheel design with high partitions allows the medical staff to safely monitor patients while creating a calming, private atmosphere for infants and their families.

Decentralized nursing stations reduce the traffic and noise levels in hallways outside patients’ rooms, and additional peace of mind comes from the added security of identity badges. Upon arrival at the hospital, families and visitors are issued security badges.

“With the technology, spaces and services the new hospital helps us provide, our physicians will be able to deliver quality medical services in a more timely manner and with added comfort for families,” said Jerrod Milton, director of campus transition for Children’s. “It’s truly a hospital families in our area can count on — one created for kids through input from kids and their families.”
