A worker who is bored on the job not only suffers himself, but his lack of focus may be detrimental to the employer, too. According to a U.K. survey of approximately 100 workers, nearly 25 percent said they felt bored most of the time and that it hurt their job performance. Eighty percent of workers surveyed said that being bored at work makes them lose concentration. More than 50 percent said that chronic boredom led them to make on-the-job mistakes.
We asked job seekers and employers to share some occupations that they think are highly engaging or nontraditional occupations. While the pay for these positions varies greatly and responsibilities increase as you move up, these seven positions offer a fresh alternative for those who need more excitement in their career.
If you're someone who likes to chat, is a self-starter and wants to build your own business base, this job may be for you. Pay in this profession can vary greatly depending on the training completed and the career path taken.
Median annual pay: $22,500*
Bartenders are great listeners and get to meet new people every day. No two days at work are ever the same. This job is about relationship building, quick decision making and being comfortable talking with people from all walks of life. Depending on the place of employment, pay can vary greatly; tips make up much of the income.
Median annual pay: $18,680 (food and beverage serving and related workers)
3. Hotel concierge
In this position, every day is unique and brings new faces. A worker in this role needs to know attractions in the city and give recommendations to guests, as well as help them with basic needs. Hours vary and may require working late nights. At times you might need to be on call as well.
Median annual pay: $46,880
Publicists work to get their clients positive press coverage and build their clients' brands. They do this through media outreach and other initiatives. While working as a publicist can be stressful and often requires a lot of hours, if you thrive on that type of work environment, this may be the role for you.

5. Law enforcement
Law enforcement officers help protect people's lives and property. It's a high-risk, highly demanding job. Duties depend on the type and size of the organization at which you work. Police officers also have one of the highest rates of on-the-job injuries and fatalities.

6. Landscape architect
Are you good at thinking about the big picture, and do you want to create amazing projects? This may be your gig. Hours and work environment -- agency or corporate -- will dictate the structure, but the opportunity to plan and design parks, recreational facilities, highways, airports and other properties can be as rewarding as it is challenging.

7. Food critic
Love to write and eat? You may be interested in becoming a food critic. You'll need to know your foods and have a discerning palate to be able to describe your culinary experiences.

While these are just some examples of less traditional jobs, the key to finding a stimulating job is determining what interests you and aligning those interests to occupations. Love to be in charge and throw parties? Look into event planning. Are you more of a gambler in life? Make a career out of it. While it's normal to get tired of your job every once in awhile, if you're someone who needs constant change, don't be afraid to pursue a career that makes you excited to go to work every day.
