On the Move: How to Evaluate a Relocation Offer
You've landed your ideal job! The position is professionally challenging, and it's with a growing company. But the opportunity will require you to move across the country. What should you do?
Deciding whether to accept a new position is never simple; relocation complicates matters further. Even if the financial and professional aspects of the deal are appealing, you should give careful consideration before saying yes. Moving to a new city can mean a significant change in the cost of living and also will impact your personal life, among other things.
Following are some tips that can help you decide what's right for you:
· Be sure you want the job. Is the company culture appealing? Will you be able to achieve your short- and long-term career goals? Are the daily responsibilities of the position interesting?
Managing the IT department at a larger company than the one you worked for previously, for example, may provide professional advancement. However, if you prefer hands-on technical projects, you may be disappointed spending much of your day overseeing broader business issues and personnel matters rather than doing the work you love.
· Take an honest look at the location. Make sure you really want to live in the new region. For instance, a remote resort area may be fun to visit on vacation but could leave you feeling isolated if you're used to urban life. Even if you have to pay for the trip yourself, visit the city and region and talk to residents to gain firsthand insight before agreeing to move.
· Prepare to negotiate. Do your research to make sure the salary is competitive for the geographic market. For instance, earning $75,000 a year as a software developer may suit you well in a small town but lower your standard of living in a major city. Trade association reports, government data and salary surveys such as our company's 2012 Salary Guide (available for free download at www.rht.com/salarycenter) can give you an idea of average compensation in different parts of the country.
Keep in mind that salary is not the only aspect of the offer that can be negotiable. Moving costs, temporary housing assistance, and travel and lodging expenses for house-hunting trips are just a few common elements of relocation packages. Gather documentation, such as estimates from moving companies and quotes on airfares, for use during the negotiations.
· Confirm the details. If you decide to accept the final relocation package, ask for the terms of the deal in writing. The document doesn't need to be formal, but it should explain all aspects of the job offer to minimize the potential for misunderstandings.
A relocation can lead to an exciting new career opportunity, but moving always requires a degree of caution. Make sure the professional and personal aspects of the move suit your preferences and needs. With research and preparation, you can be confident you are heading in the right direction.
